What is adult dentistry?

Adult dentistry is a subspecialty of dentistry that focuses on the oral health and systemic health consequences of dental disease, as well as promoting optimal dental function in the elderly and those who have complex medical conditions.

It is a complex practice that requires extensive training in both pediatric dentistry and geriatric dentistry.

Adult dentists diagnose and provide comprehensive treatment for diseases such as periodontal disease, cancer, temporomandibular joint disorders, sleep apnea, head and neck cancers, osteoporosis, severe caries, and tooth wear.

Most people think of dentists as professionals who are responsible for ensuring your mouth is healthy and clean. This couldn't be more accurate. Adult dentistry encompasses the complete care of a patient's mouth from the very beginning of their lives to the end.

How often should children visit the dentist?

Dental health is a very important area of care for children and parents should be aware of the frequency appropriate to their child's dental visits.

As children grow, their teeth develop under the gums (known as the "baby teeth"), and by the time they reach three years old, all 20 primary teeth have usually come in. This means that children should visit a dentist every six months so that any developing problems can be spotted early on and treated before they cause more serious issues.

Parents should make sure that their children visit the dentist at least twice a year. Dentists can identify dental issues before they become a problem as well as offer solutions to common problems.

Family dentistry

Family dentistry is the dental care for all members of a family, from infants to grandparents.

This includes preventative care, oral hygiene instruction, and treatment of oral health problems.

We should mention that family dentists have advanced training in all aspects of oral care and maintain a professional demeanor when consulting with small patients and parents alike. They will often take the time during the initial consultation period so that everyone is clear on what needs to be done before proceeding.
